About Us
Who Are We?
Brumfield Gallery is the trading name for Imprint Gallery LLC, a small company based in Astoria, Oregon. It was established in 2017 to open Imprint Gallery in Cannon Beach. In July 2020, the couple relocated the gallery to their hometown, Astoria, and rebranding the space under the name Brumfield Gallery. The co-owners Jane & Mike Brumfield have had galleries in Boise, Idaho and Hastings, England, before settling on the Oregon Coast. Prior to this Jane had a 20-year career curating for small regional museums in the South of England. Mike comes from a very different background, having a 40-year career in the oil and gas industry, and approaching the gallery world from a collector’s perspective |
What Are We About?
The Cannon Beach gallery quickly established itself as one of the most interesting galleries on the Oregon Coast, and the new gallery in Astoria will continue to build on that reputation. Astoria is a vibrant town with a growing energy around its lively arts scene.
We have established ongoing relationships with our artists and collectors, with the aim of providing a supportive and welcoming environment where the appreciation and creation of new work can flourish. Our selections are informed by our own taste, so we recognize that our success is based on the coming together of like minds. We hope you like the way we think.
What Do We Show?
We choose work that is engaging on an emotional level - work that speaks to the complicated nature of the human condition. We are often asked to categorize the kind of art we show, and find that difficult. It borders surrealism, symbolism, and fantasy, but we do not see these boxes as being relevant. It is perhaps better likened to the literary tradition of magic realism. It questions what we perceive as real and shows that there is only a thin veil between that reality and the imagined world. The work is born from authentic human experience and from a particular individual’s perspective. And then sometimes... we might show work just because we like it.
